Winter in
Mayrhofen -
a skier's paradise
The skiing
Great news is the Penken gondola, which was opened winter `95, serving
this mountain from the resort. The new lift runs 47 gondolas, each of
which holds 15 skiers. It takes 2,000 people per hour up from the center of
Mayrhofen to the mountain - an increase of over 300 per cent - so queues
are a thing of the past. It copes with winds up to 90 kph and also goes
much further up the mountain than the old lift, so you are delivered
straight into the heart of the skiing. To achieve this the gondola has
to take a bend - and it is the first such lift in the world to run at
full speed while changing direction.
Penken and Horberg-Gerent
feature plenty of varied runs, mostly suiting the wide range of
intermediates. However, including a number of tougher entries, notably
between the peak of Schafskopf and the village of Hippach. For
snowboarders a huge fun park with various attractions will be opened
near the, Hintertrett'- quadruple-chairlift. And good skiers and
snowboarders have the opportunity to try the interesting glacier skiing
at Hintertux half an hour away.
Those who prefer leisurely
lunches to deep snow adventure should not miss the collection of
mountain restaurants around, the Mayrhofen ski area.
Mayrhofen not only offers a
ski pass covering the entire Ziller valley (enabling you to ski on the
glacier and to use more than 150 lifts), but there are lower priced
tickets for children, youngsters and those skiing after 11 am, 11.45am
or 2pm. The less you ski the less you pay.
Like birds on the
wing
A brilliant blue sky, shimmering white snow, a light wind gently sweeping
up the mountain slopes. That is the backdrop for paragliders hovering in
the air like birds on the wing, turning their circles high above the
heads of the skiers. With fascinating lightness the colorful sails rise
up whisking the pilot off the ground and leaving a trail of footprints
that vanishes in thin air.
You don't have to be a
pilot yourself to be able to enjoy the unique experience of gliding
silently through the skies. In Mayrhofen you can take a ride in a
double-seated glider, along with an experienced pilot. Operating two
control lines together with great precision the pilot guides his
passengers safely down to the valley.
