Obergürgl,
Hochgürgl Austria
The Skiing in
depth...
- Skiable to just over 3,000 meters, these
resorts often open to skiers as early as late November, and remain
skiable until late May. With around 100 kilometers of runs available,
the division between those that are best suitable to beginners,
intermediates and experts is almost even, with the largest selection
falling in the middle intermediate range.
-
- Hochgurgl, at 2,150
meters is the highest parish village in Austria and it has the
snow record to match its height. In Obergurgl at 1,930 meters
the cable car takes skiers to the mostly intermediate range of
slopes and lifts on the Festkogl. Those who require serious challenge
should drop off at the right hand side of the lift into the unprepared run through the Fertwaltal
to the lower lift station. On a scenic note, a ride up to the
Hohe Muton, on the single chair lift is a must. The summit offers
a fantastic view of the surrounding 21 glaciers and peaks exceeding
3,000 meters. The slopes down are quite steep mind, and we are
not sure if you can take the chair back down. Best to ask first.
The neighboring villages of Untergurgl and
Hochgurgl are not connected with the main ski areas, but are
on the same lift pass.
A free bus service, however makes it a relatively
simple matter to get to these villages, and we strongly recommend
you do make the effort.
