Welcome to Alpbach in Tirol Austria
OK now. You are deciding on a destination for your next ski
vacation, right? Somebody suggests Austria. Well why not? Somebody else suggests Alpbach.
You are not familiar with the resort, but it sounds OK. But what is it really like, will it be
a good place for your group or family?
Probably yes is the answer. In a country filled
with resorts that fit the word "typical" to a "T",
Alpbach still manages to stand out as one of the
most typical of all. Small,
never really madhouse crowded, and dauntingly beautiful, Alpbach
has all of the ingredients, the mountains, the
inns, the food, the wine and the people. To that
end, the resort is near perfect, one in which you
can have just as good a day off the slopes as on Night life in Alpbach
can also probably be
best described as laid back. That is not to
say that there is none, there is. It is however mostly
small groups of friends hanging out together and
reliving their day's exploits on the slopes. The
small hotels and gasthofs in the resort lend
themselves perfectly to that type of after ski
activity.
Alpbach is not an expensive resort as things go,
with good value both in the hotels and on the
slopes the order of the day. This good value adds
to the popularity and perhaps helps to explain why
this little station commands so much loyalty from
its visitors. Helps to explain indeed, but there
is much more than meets the eye.
Alpbach's popularity can not be credited to its
skiing alone. Sure it's adequate, but there are
bigger resorts offering more. As well the resort's
popularity cannot be credited solely to its post
card beauty, although that too contributes. It is
not a great shopping center, nor, as we have said
is its night life the stuff of legends. In fact we
would be hard pressed on these pages to explain
the success of the neat little Tyrolian resort.
Could it be that skiers on holiday want what
skiing in Europe used to be? Value, pleasant
skiing and an unspoiled, friendly mountain
village? You be the judge.
As the popularity of Alpbach is the stuff legends
are made of, the place boasts legions of loyal
visitors who return year after year, summer or
winter. This loyalty creates a special kinship
among the visitors, many of whom establish strong
bonds of friendship as they meet in Alpbach over a
number of years. This kinship spills over into the
local community and each successive year one
returns to Alpbach it seems more and more like a
homecoming. That friends is a real ski holiday
scene.
